Taking Action On Climate Change

The Oxford English Dictionary recently announced "climate emergency" as its word of the year for 2019. They define it as “a situation in which urgent action is required to reduce or halt climate change and avoid potentially irreversible environmental damage resulting from it.”

We agree that action is needed now, and because transportation is one of the largest sources of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, we are in a position to help. The use of biodiesel, renewable diesel and a blend of these two clean fuels can make a major difference for our environment in the immediate future.

Biodiesel is a competitively priced product with a proven track record of strong performance that also helps reduce emissions and petroleum consumption. Renewable diesel is a newer alternative fuel that also has excellent environmental and performance benefits while being a drop-in replacement for petroleum diesel.

Their environmental benefits are perhaps best shown by the carbon intensity scores given them by the state of California. Carbon intensity is the measure of GHG emissions associated with producing and consuming a fuel, and California assigns every fuel a score as one of its progressive policies to reduce air pollution. Biodiesel and renewable diesel consistently rank first and second among liquid fuels and natural gas options in California’s carbon intensity scores.

Blend for the best of both

Blending biodiesel and renewable diesel is one way Chevron Renewable Energy Group is leading the way on sustainable fuel options to fight climate change. Blending biodiesel and renewable diesel — instead of blending either with only petroleum diesel — results in a product that features the best characteristics of the two fuels. We offer a blend like this called UltraClean BlenD™.

A biodiesel and renewable diesel blend significantly reduces a fleet’s carbon footprint and emissions, including total hydrocarbons, particulate matter, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides (NOx). Plus, the fuel’s performance doesn’t suffer — thanks to higher Cetane, added lubricity, lower aromatics and a great Cloud Point.

Because demand currently outpaces supply for renewable diesel, blending biodiesel is a good way to stretch supply while still making a positive step toward sustainability. Download our free Chevron Renewable Energy Group UltraClean BlenD white paper for more information.

Making a difference now

Fleets are trying different fuel sources to reduce emissions, with a heavy focus on electric. We support an integrated energy management approach — it doesn’t have to be all or nothing. In fact, focusing on an all-electric solution may mean you’re overlooking solutions that can have an impact now. After all, fleets will remain largely diesel for quite a while.

Biodiesel, renewable diesel and blends like Chevron Renewable Energy Group UltraClean BlenD™ are drop-in fuels, meaning fleets can start using them in existing equipment without waiting years for the technology and infrastructure required by other fuel sources.

They are perhaps the easiest way to make a difference now — and help prevent “climate emergency” from becoming the word of the next decade.
