Pump Labeling Requirements

Following FTC regulations at your operation.

In every U.S. state, biodiesel and renewable diesel can be blended with traditional petroleum diesel up to 5%. At this blend level, the fuel still meets the ASTM D975 fuel specification and does not require any additional labeling at the pump. Once retailers begin to sell blends containing more than 5% biodiesel or renewable diesel, labeling is required.

Labeling is a good business practice — and it’s the law. 

Clearly posting prices and diesel grades is an important part of selling biodiesel and renewable diesel. Pump label requirements provide an opportunity to easily and clearly integrate blended fuels. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regulates biodiesel and renewable diesel pump labeling in four categories:

1–5% Biofuel 

• No pump label is required except for Washington. Washington policy requires labeling “May contain up to 5% Biodiesel” per WAC 16-662-105.

• Biodiesel and renewable diesel blended fuels up to 5% are handled the same as straight diesel fuel.

5–20% Biofuel

•  One pump label is required for all blend amounts between 5 and 20%.
• In some states, retailers that switch blends within the range are required to specifically note the blend (e.g., B10, B11, etc.).
• B6 to B20 biodiesel can be tested for combined fuel quality using the ASTM D7467 method.
  

Over 20% Biofuel

• Pump label is required stating the specific blend level (e.g., B21)
• Label states the blend in the header and with the text “contains more than 20% biodiesel” underneath.

100% Biofuel

• Pump label is required if sold at retail. 

Biodiesel and renewable diesel pump labels are generally available for sale from many state petroleum marketer associations. Check with your local association for more information on labeling requirements in your state.
