Cummins and Chevron Make High-Powered CNG Engines a Reality

As the saying goes, “Great minds think alike,” and in the case of bringing a high-powered compressed natural gas (CNG) engine to the forefront of fleet operations, it took an aligned thinking approach between Chevron and Cummins Inc. to turn a vision into reality.

"Chevron and Cummins have collaborated on numerous projects to ensure that customers and fleets have access to alternative fuels such as renewable diesel, biodiesel, compressed natural gas and hydrogen,” said Brian Peterson, Chevron Renewable Fuels National Sales Manager.

Mark Jamieson, Business Development Director at Cummins, said a priority of the company is bringing their Destination Zero plan to life, which is Cummins’ strategy for reaching zero emissions by 2050 across Cummins’ facilities and operations, including near-term 2030 goals. A big part of that plan was the release of the Cummins X15N engine, the first 15-liter natural gas engine that brings enough power and torque to support the needs of fleet customers across the industry.

Chevron leaders work side by side with companies to meet them where they are on their lower carbon journey, whether that’s as an introduction to renewable fuels or exploring the next step in their reduced carbon emissions plan. Fleet operators who are unfamiliar with CNG-powered engines can try equipment firsthand through the Chevron X15N truck program.

“Chevron's demo program highlights the value of the X15N engine,” Peterson said. “We have three Peterbilt day cabs to be able to provide fleets the experience of driving CNG vehicles to experience the horsepower and torque to see how well it operates compared to a traditional diesel engine.”

For customers like Cummins, who has built a strong relationship with Chevron over many years, it’s the progressive and continuous mode of forward-thinking that has helped position them as a global power leader in the industry.

“These collaborations are critical so that when we sit down with fleets that are really interested in learning about new alternative fuels, we can talk about the technology together,” Peterson said.
