Biodiesel: A Simple Step Today for Cleaner Air Right Now

Each day a fleet waits to switch to cleaner fuels, more harmful emissions enter our communities. Biodiesel is an easy-to-adopt, high-quality fuel that can significantly lower emissions today. Why wait?

We Must Act Now

As state and local officials debate clean air policies and fleets make decisions on what fuel to use, much of the focus is on technology that will take years, maybe even more than a decade, to be viable. Meanwhile, too many fleets continue to run on petroleum diesel.

Time is of the essence. Climate scientists say we must make significant progress soon on global warming or the consequences will be dire. Adding to the problem is the fact that carbon emissions stay in the atmosphere a long time and accumulate, meaning every moment we wait makes things worse.

Change must start with the transportation sector, which is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S.

An Easy Way to Cut Emissions Today

Often overlooked is that there’s a clean fuel readily available and able to reduce harmful emissions right now: biodiesel.

Reduces lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by up to 86% versus petroleum diesel.

Can be used in existing diesel engines and fueling infrastructure.

High-performing fuel with ample supply to meet demand.

A Proven Regulatory Success

California’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard is considered one of the premier clean air regulations in the world — and biodiesel is one of the most effective fuels in the program.

From 2011 through 2019, biodiesel reduced carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 9.3 million metric tons under the LCFS, more than electricity, natural gas and hydrogen. Also, the state assigns carbon intensity scores to all fuels, with a lower score meaning lower lifecycle emissions. Here’s how biodiesel stacks up:*

  • Biodiesel: 27.0
  • Renewable diesel: 34.6
  • Compressed natural gas from fossil fuels: 79.2
  • Electricity from the California grid: 82.9
  • Petroleum diesel: 100.5
