Celebrating Two Years of REG Ultra Clean®

REG Cali Truck

Two years ago, we launched an innovative new fuel called REG Ultra Clean®, a proprietary blend of renewable diesel and biodiesel. We are excited to celebrate the success of this blend’s environmental impact thus far, as well as its implications for the future of the renewable fuel market.

We led the effort to blend renewable diesel and biodiesel because we wanted to give fleets another option to easily and effectively reduce harmful emissions — and to do it right away because the world cannot wait to take action on climate change.
Also, as clean air regulations become more widespread, our customers need fuel options to meet those demands, and REG Ultra Clean does exactly that.
We knew the advantages of renewable diesel and biodiesel individually. What we learned is that blending them together in a certain way brings out the best characteristics of each, including reduced emissions. Many people don’t realize that biodiesel actually does a better job than renewable diesel at reducing most tailpipe emissions, including particulate matter, carbon monoxide and total hydrocarbons.
Combined, they create a fuel that, compared to ultra-low-sulfur diesel (ULSD)1:
  • Reduces total hydrocarbons by more than 20%
  • Reduces particulate matter by more than 40%
  • Reduces carbon monoxide by more than 25%
  • Reduces nitrogen oxides (NOx) by 10%
Since April 2018, REG Ultra Clean has reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by at least 178,576 metric tons. That's equivalent to the GHG emissions created by an average passenger vehicle driving over 443 million miles2 — or three times the distance between Earth and Mars.

Proof in the Performance

REG Ultra Clean is also an approved fuel by the California Air Resources Board, one of the most stringent clean air agencies in the world — and fleets are taking notice.
For California Fuels & Lubricants,  a fuel supplier in Southern California, offering REG Ultra Clean is a way to meet customer demands for a sustainable fuel that also performs well.
“Fleets are trying to lower their greenhouse gas emissions and carbon footprints,” says Jaime Duenas, President of California Fuels & Lubricants. “Renewable fuels help us meet the needs of our longtime customers and bring on new customers that are looking for a cleaner fuel.”
The company even runs its own fleet on REG Ultra Clean.
“That speaks to our confidence in the fuel’s performance and its emissions profile,” says Duenas.

More Than an Emissions Reduction Tactic

Running on a more environmentally friendly fuel doesn’t mean fleet performance has to suffer. In fact, REG Ultra Clean delivers the best performance attributes of both: biodiesel’s excellent lubricity and renewable diesel’s high Cetane and low Cloud Point — all in a 100% renewable fuel.
Plus, it’s easy to blend, store and handle, so it’s a simple switch to make.
And with renewable diesel demand outpacing supply, blending in biodiesel can help stretch allocations and save on fuel costs. Ruan Transportation, a leading company in the trucking industry, has experienced this, along with the emissions and performance benefits, with a portion of its California fleet running on REG Ultra Clean.
“Using a blend like this helps offset some of the renewable diesel demand,” says Steve Larsen, Director of Fuel and Procurement at Ruan Transportation. “And we have not had any performance disruptions whatsoever.”

Our Fuel Forward Focus

With growing emphasis on cleaner fuels, we expect biodiesel, renewable diesel and REG Ultra Clean usage will grow because of their effectiveness. Waiting for other options to become less expensive or able to meet the performance needs of fleets, especially in the heavy-duty trucking industry, is not an option — making the switch to a drop-in renewable fuel can make an immediate impact.
We are grateful to work with organizations who see the value in reducing emissions, and we look forward to continuing these relationships and forming new ones.
We’d love to tell you more about what this blend could do for you. Fill out our contact form or call us at (844) 405-0160 .
